I got imac 0s10 g4 and garageband and itunes. I'm completely new to mac but I have a friend who has a mixer and I have acess to a akg condenser mic and was wondering if I can simply hook up the mixer and mic to the mac and start some kind of software program that'll let me click add track, add the instrumental, than allow me to click record-start recording my vocals thru tha micraphone and mixer as necessary over the instrumental on track1. than export it to mp3. A similar tool on tha pc is acoustica. please help, I heard I can save money by doing this, because I was gonna go to a big studio. I'm also not that fluent with appz like soundforge and protools, cuz it looks too confusing sometimes. holla back and thanks in advance.

No you can not! At least not on an iMac G4-800 Mac OS-X boot only - like I have. You'll need an audio interface/box of some kind. (This gadget is essential really, if want to have topnotch audio quality ) A) ( cheap solution ) I think Belkin makes something called iMic, although I have only heard bad things about it. B) ( more expensive ) Mbox from Digidesign usb-based audio/midi interface. (Tascam/M-audio and others makes audio interfaces fw/usb based) All these 3 have had driver problems under OS-X Panther/Jaguar. But check their websites, for updts C) ( expensive solution ) Motu makes both 828 MK-II and 896 fw based interfaces. Excellent products both of them. Presonus makes a fwbased interface called Firestation - which also seems good. Well... maybe some good folks on this list knows other solutions, as well. Cheers: Dixiechicken

There's also the M audio usb (or firewire) audiophile. Midi In/Out 2 phono in 2 phono out 2 1/4 jack in 1 1/4 jack headphone out
(firewire does not have the 2 1/4 jack ins)
