At the moment I'm mixing with headphones(no $$ for good monitors yet). Anyone have any tips for correcting bass problems? I'm thinking of somehow applying a master EQ to everything while mixing with the low-end tapered off. Then remove this master EQ prior to final mixdown. Anyone have any better ideas?

Be careful when listening to headphones for a very long time. You could do damage to your hearing and they will never be good to mix in. I would suggest getting some monitors as soon as you can. In my opinion adding the EQ while you are mixing just adds something else that can go wrong in the chain of events. As with any mixing situation, find a reference of something you know very well or are trying to sound like. Take a little time to listen to this reference in your headphones before and during your mix to give you a little perspective on your mix. Take breaks when your ears start to feel tired especially when using headphones. Any work you might feel like you are losing out on by taking frequent breaks would probably be detrimental if you can't hear properly anyway. Good luck.
