My sound card supports upto 24bit 96khz. Ive been wise enough to start recording in 24bit (I think i can hear a difference, a certain shimmer stays with the sound) but im still recording in 44.1. If i start recording in 96k will it make a difference? I dont think my silver ears can tell the difference!

Not unless you're a bat.

The general consensus from what I've read seems to be that upping the bit rate is more beneficial to the sound than upping the sample rate. Recording at 96KHz will doubtless improve audio quality, but not so much that 99.99% of people will be able to tell.

24-bit, 44.1KHz seems like a good compromise, it preserves audio detail, saves file space and avoids accumulating artefacts when downsampling from 48 or 96 to 44.1.
