i have been reading a book on how to use logic audio. there is a section in the book describing a specific way to set up midi devices in the environment. it says to create a multi instrument and then create a port object and cable them together... the only problem is, i cant find where you create a port object. i pulled down the "new" menu expecting to find "port object" but it is not there. how do you create a port object?

i am using logic audio platinum version 5.5 for osx if that helps.

In most cases don't worry about creating a port object.

You can assign a port to a multi instrument in its instrument parameter box on left of environment.
Port, Cha, Prg, Vol, pan etc....

you don't really need a port object if you are only creating simple environments.

However, if you want you can create a new "instrument" assign its "Cha" to "all" and its "Port" to desired USB out and then cable your multi instrument to this object. Name this "instrument" with the port number if you want.
This will have a similar effect to what the book is describing.

ok, but how do i create and actual port object? is there a menu function to do so? i own a dumb MIDI controller (no sounds built in) and a dr. groove drum machine. the drum machine is capable of playing bass sounds as well as drum sounds. i have my MIDI setup so that my controller goes into the IN 1 of the interface. the OUT 1 of the interface goes to the drum machine. and the MIDI OUT of the drum machine goes to the IN 2 of the interface. i want to recreate exactly that in the logic environment. that is what the book is trying to take me through in a step-by-step process. so i am really trying to follow it.

Sorry, I did not make myself clear. There is no port object anymore. If you want to create an environment like in your book do as I stated in the last paragraph of my previous post.

create a new "instrument" assign its "Cha" to "all" and its "Port" to desired USB out (Name this "instrument" with the port number if you want) and then cable your multi instrument to this object.

The "instrument" object created above functions the same as a port object.

i think i just realized one of my problems in working in the environment... if i want to create an instrument in logic to represent my actual sound module, i would only create an instrument for every module that receives MIDI information, correct? for example, i have a MIDI controller that has no sounds internally, i just use it as a keyboard to trigger other sounds. then i have a drum machine which makes drum sounds and bass sounds. since the keyboard only sends MIDI data, i would not make in instrument for it in the environment, but i would for the drum machine because it does receive MIDI data.

great... ive been having a little trouble getting my instruments to sound but i think this is going to help me out. i will try this next chance i get some free time. i dont know why i didnt realize this before, logic's documentation is just not too clear in explaining this concept. i guess more experienced people would have just understood this concept without it having to be said.

thanks a lot for your help, formatj, you really have been very helpful with me. i appreciate it.

one other quick question, right now i dont have an audio interface (i had to take out my audiowerk8 because it was creating a conflict under osx) i have for the system to use the built in core audio in the hardware and drivers section. if i play any sounds through my MIDI system, i should still hear the sounds through the little speaker on the front of the computer, right?

If you are trying to play the sounds on your drum machine you won't hear them through the internal speaker. The sound from this comes out the line out or headphone out of your drum machine. Where have you connected the line outs of your drum machine? You can connect these to audio input of your mac and turn software monitoring on in "Audio hardware and drivers" and then you can hear the drum machine though your speakers.
If you are playing any software synthesizers on your computer (e.g. ESM, ESP etc in logic) you will hear sound through your internal speaker.

Hi I am interested in this thread because I am in a similar situation, but with out the external drum machine. I have been able to get the synths loaded in the AudioInst channels, but I cant seem to get the Drums mapped loaded, or any of the other included synths in Logic Gold or just in the Quicktime or any other softsynth. If I play and record within the drum track, it records and I see the notes but there is no way to hear. Yet I can hear the ES2 when I play that. I am playing and it is working in both 9.2 and 10.2.
