I want to know if anyone has experienced unexpected shifting of takes from a prepared audio comp in the Arrange window of Logic 8.

I am having a very frustrating experience working with an audio comp of a keyboard part that was recorded from three different takes.

Toggling the region that contains the different takes and creating one beautiful take (a comp) from those takes in Logic 8 was quite easy and simply amazing. smile.gif

BUT, here comes the frustrating part. I realized that there were certain parts of my playing that occurs in the middle of phrases that I didn't want, so I decided to first, split the region (comp) in various sections, toggle each region and fade out the playing that I didn't want from the takes.
This didn't seem to be a problem, because after I did the editing of the takes, closed each section
of the chopped region, I listened to the perfect keyboard part that I wanted. I did a SAVE on my
arrangement and listened a couple of more times NO PROBLEM. I closed Logic for a couple of hours.

After reopening Logic and listening to my project I'm hearing parts of my audio keyboard comp are missing-specifically, from the last chopped region of the comp. Some of it plays....some of it doesn't. I toggled the region open and found two of the takes sitting about 20 bars further down
the arrange window than from when I had initially saved my arrangement. This wouldn't bother me, but the takes can't be manipulated like a region. They are somehow clipped to the arrange window. This is why I don't understand how they moved in the first place!!!

Does anyone know if there is a way to "unclip" the takes and manipulate them in the arrange window so I can place them back in their initial positions of the comp. This would be a HUGE help. Or, can someone possibly tell me why the takes shifted.

I'm thinking I probably should have merged all the split regions of the comp after I heard everything OK; but who knows if that would have made a difference in the saving of the keyboard part or not. This has happened TWICE, and it was a lot of editing!!!!. So, I just want to understand what could possibly be going wrong and.....Happily finish my project!!!

I would REALLY appreciate anyone's expertise on this delimna. And, to those who actually read this whole post and can be of help.....

Many thanks,
D.

Hi. I had a similar problem a couple of weeks ago, but with a voice part. Not as complicated as yours but it was driven me crazy too.
I did what you mention in your post: Merge it....Suddenly everything went right.!
I guess there are so many things you have to "tell" Logic to do with your files, that may be one or two could be missing....

Merging is not that bad, because you are still having the original regions and in the case you could regret later.....they are still there...
I hope this could help you, as far as you´re not alone in this one..... smile.gif

Don't know why takes shifted but here's a workaround. You might want to try to go to the comp region and click the arrow in the top right corner of the region and select "unpack to new track" this will take each of the takes and send them to separate tracks and then you can edit them. Before you mess with the decent comp I would bounce it as an audio file so that you always have it in its condensed form. And if your want to be extra safe, make a copy of each audio file and then do your destructive editing on the copies that way you always have the original file in your audio bin.

hope this helps

B and Emgcarra, thanks for your input. I had to complete the project last week; and figure something out.

In order to get the shifted regions back to there original positions, I did have to "unpack" them. I can't remember if I "unpacked to new track" like you mentioned B, but the "unpacking" was necessary in order to get the region to move back in the arrange window. Once I got the region set back into place, I did a "flatten and merge" of three split region pieces (including the one that I had to reset) and those pieces were merged into one single portion of the comp. The restoration took a bit of work and I'm not sure if it was the most efficient solution.

Emgcarra I am curious as to what you did that "made everything fall in place". Did parts of your vocally suddenly shift measures away from it's original position before you did your merge?

I would be interested in hearing any other experiences and tips with Logic's comping to make my music making life a lot easier.

Anyway, Apple needs to be made aware of these sort of instances. The comping process is a great feature in Logic 8 but shifting regions aren't good for serious / fun music making.

Oh yeah, B.....

I think you're right about bouncing a comp your satisfied with before doing any destructive editing.

Thanks. cool.gif

Hi Derok:

I´ll try to explain myself.... While recording those vocals, I went a little mad and didn´t stop and start again, after each error, so I just punched over the same region...Then, when was the time to mix I did what I thought were small adjustment and bounced.
To my surprise when ad´s agency got the file, they couldn´t hear some parts of it....They send it back to me and I found that indeed, there were missing parts....Fortunately I had the original files and could re-do the hole thing.. Graving files and re-doing the composite and then merged them again....
Bad shifted regions had only happen to me with what I call "pseudo-audio files"...I mean, with virtual instruments files, but I guess it was my fault.....Punching "record" in the wrong place of a song, or when importing songs, or when replacing "enviroment"...
That was then...Now we don´t have to deal with "env." anymore...
Thank God it´s Tuesday...!

Regards
