I was considering purchasing one to have just to record in the "field" and to lay down rough ideas with, would 300Mhz be sufficent to run the app provided enough ram were installed?

It really depends on how much work you make it do. If you are only recording one or two tracks and don't plan on using a whole mess of plug ins you'll be ok, if you really wwant to make the machine work for you, I mean recording multi-tracks and have alot of softsynths and fx plug ins you may want a 500.

Absolutely right, Synthetik - with a new (or secondhand new version) iBook you could double your chip speed to 600. Of course, it's going to cost a shedload more cash than a 300MHz, but is it worth buying something now that is already struggling to keep up with Logic etc? I think you'd find yourself wanting to do more with the laptop very quickly.
