My question here pertains to Jaguar, which I just installed on a Beige G3 that was previously using OS 9 exclusively for music programs. Jaguar is the last OS that'll install on that machine with the limits of RAM and video I have there.

So, after some difficulty (Jaguar installs can be difficult if the computer is hooked to a PC monitor via a display adapter, tending to go into an unwakeable sleep mode in the midst of the install) I got Jaguar up to v. 10.2.8. My whole reason for doing this was that I'd found a small patch that allowed Core MIDI to connect up with the built in serial ports of the Beige (the patch is called StealthMIDI).

Much to my dismay, Audio MIDI Setup will not run; the animation of a program launching happens, but the actual app never appears. I have no idea why this is, or how to fix it. Without it I cannot run my OS X MIDI music programs; I sure hope someone knows the fix. Oh, BTW, the version of Audio MIDI Setup on the machine is 1.0.1.

All I can think of is that the machine's dropping into sleep just seconds before the finish of the "Optimizing System Performance" in the 10.2.8. Combo Update install may have either left something out or not complete connections among files. I'd repaired permissions and checked the hard drive with Disk First Aid, and all flaws were fixed. Alas, Audio MIDI Setup still doesn't launch. Please help if you can.

First I think it'd be way better to keep the mac under OS 9, more bang in the end. OS X kills G3-G4 under 800 MHz and can't be used for much more than trivial job under 800 (read : typing, email, web…). IMHO, you ask too much to the poor beast anyway.

Have you asked for an optimize system (update prebinding) using Onyx for exemple? unsure.gif
