Can anyone help with some tips for preventing drop outs on cdr's? I am having trouble with cd's burned in itunes not reading properly in other machines..but other musicians i know manage to burn cdr's on a similar set up to mine without the same problem and I don't know how to check to see if its my cd writer or what else it might be...

It might be a problem with your CD drive.

By default, iTunes burns discs with maximum speed - try slower options, they're always safer.

its a good idea to burn 16x or less. 12x if ur burning for car audio. commercial grade cd's are much more accurately made, whereas home burners introduce many more errors. these are usually accounted for by another computer, but in a cd player it will burp.
