all i can do is restart and then i can start over. what causes this and how do i make it stop?

Can you PLEASE be more specific about your particular situation.
What computer do you use? Which Mac OS-version. How much ram? What harddrive and size do you have? What version of DP-3? What interfaces do you use?
What have you done just before it slows to crawl? What are the size of your projects? Number of tracks? Number of plugins? Do you have virtual instruments/synths involved?

sounds like you could have a problem with the disc you are writing to, check that you aren't writing to your system disc and that you have enough space left on your drive.
