Try to borrow another (external) burner, Yamaha, Plextor, La Cie, Iomega or another reputable brand, to see what happens.

are you sure, you finalized the burnt cdrs? i have the same philips and no problems using these cdrs on my mac

As for dc-rom burners. Yamaha make good ones. Have only good experiences from their external scsi-burners, never had a problem burning a cd on them.
Still have an old Yamaha 4x4x6 scsi with updated roms, that still works fine. (albeit very slow by todays standards).

i use sony audio cdrs and sony audio cdrws and other brands - never used memorex - you should also try to clean your philips recorder as well as your mac's cd-burner with a special cleaning-cd (cleans the laser)
