I just bought a 17" Powerbook G4 to use with a MOTU 896HD and record to an external FireWire hard drive. While I was on the MOTU site I noticed a note that says G4's with FireWire 800 have a problem running a MOTU unit and a FireWire hard drive at the same time and that installing a card is required and either the MOTU unit or the FireWire Drive has to run off the card. The message was about a year old so I was wondering if this was still true. It seems kinda lame if I can't use my brand new state-of-the-art Mac to run the MOTU unit and a Firewire drive without buying a card. Anyone know about this?
Thanks, Gauss

I am in the same situation, except I haven't gotten the 896 yet...
Motu has driver updates on their site, and I believe Apple has a Panther update that adresses this (I have Jaguar, for now). BUT, I have also heard that the Apple update doesn't fix anything, just warns you about the problem.
So what's the real story?
