Hi. I am just about to take the plubge and buy a G5 DP1.8 but the thing that is really bugging me is display choice. Is it true that you can in fact use any display (with the right type of connectors obviously)? Or do you need a monitor that is apple compatible? Theoretically I realise that I can use any monitor but I can't afford to buy a monitor that won't work with the G5. I was looking in particular at the LG L1710S. Any suggestions to other monitors would also be helpful.

Yes you can, you'll have to get an adaptor as you say.

Perhaps you will not be able to access all possible screen resolutions,
but you should be able to acces all the standard ones with no probs.

(800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024, 1400x1050, 1600x1200 up to the limits
of your graphics card and monitor - whichever comes first)

Your G5 has an AGP (advanced graphics) slot and 3 PCI slots. Each card can carry 2 monitors.

The AGP slot graphics cards for the current Macs have an Apple proprietary output, which e.g carries power so you need only one wire for the monitor. A small adapter changes it to the XVGA or SVGA standard format.

Older cards (the ATI Radeon 7000) go in the PCI slots and have XVGA outputs.

I have one of each of the above for 4 monitors: 2 Apple 23" Cinema HD, a Cintiq (which is a monitor on which you can write or for music use sliders on) and a projector. For Apple you can put as many monitors as you wish and arrange the displays as you wish - although theoretically only 2 monitors per computer are supported.

i have a g5 and mines came with an adapter. i just plugged in my old monitor. i don't if that will help but there you go.

I just got a G5, but even with the provided adapter, I can't plug in the Apple Display from my old beige G3. The plug from the monitor seems like some kind of apple specific configuration on it. It seems to include the keyboard and mouse connections as well.

Does anyone know about an adapter that works with old G3 era Apple displays?

Hi, glad you raised this point, I've been a bit concerned that an extremely large, heavyweight 19" apple display which someone let me have a few days ago (with a couple of old powermacs thrown in for £100.00 )might be incompatible with my planned purchase of a G5.
I cant see the connector round the back as I cant ***** move it! I'd like to be be able to re assign the cash I've saved on a big screen monitor, to pay for some other gadgets like maybe a little Mackie mixer or something.
I'm pretty perplexed looking at all the arcane little symbols describing the functions of peculiar scuzzis, plus 'little round ones'(!) and other pre USB sockets on the powermacs.
I must admit that although their function isnt clear just yet, for connectivity the plethora of ins+outs on the old powermacs seems generous compared with the later imac.
Surely somebody makes adapters for using gear from discontinued models?

I just ordered an Apple 922-1458 adapter, which purports to address this issue of adapting my beige G3 era Apple Vision display with the G5 adapter. I'll let y'all know if it in fact works, or if it's just the phone number of some lonely Apple technician.

It's $20, by the way, and only available through some arcane sites which stockpiled 'em.
