I am just buying a Powerbook 15" G4 1.25 with 10.3(Panther)and also M Audios Firewire 410.
Can anyone assure me that this is a good system for recording music and approx the limitations of audio and midi? (how many tracks etc.)
I have always stuck by my trusty Atari 1040 but realised it was time to switch. Ive owned macs for years but never for music as I had so many problems with cubase on the mac.
Whats the timing like? Any glitching? Does the Firewire 410 work with OSX 10.3.
Can you write an entire track in audio, I am assuming that the mac records the audio track so I wont need to take the device when arranging, is this right??

can't vouch for m-audio's fw410 drivers and don't know about panther compatibility, but you should definitely be able to use all the i/o on that soundcard with 1.25ghz pbook.

the fw410 only has two ins, so just hook up your mics or instruments or mixer and track away! the headphones or outs should be easy to setup so you can hear your mix and track along.

as far as how many tracks of audio you can run i'd say 'plenty'.

your only big issues should be getting panther drivers from m-audio for the fw410 and choosing a good sequencing/recording app that works in panther.

I just bought a firewire 410 and No the current driver does not work with Panther. I have sent an email to M-Audio regarding this issue, but no reply yet. I actually checked the package contents of the M-Audio kernel extension and it only shows support for Jaguar and Puma. So I'm either waiting for an update or going back to Jaguar.

I still have my 410 in the box. I know they are worried about this because the retailers are responding to complaints by buyers! I am using OS 9.2.2 and there's no provision, it turns out, for a FireWire Audio device! I've been writing to brad@m-audio.com and he has been pretty responsive.

I'm a little worried that OS9 is not important to anyone! Too old but if Englishboyonice is still using a 68040 computer then I wonder if there are'nt a lot of folk who are using older systems that might want to take advantage of the 410.

Incidentally it has four inputs and ten outs(4-10=410)

bilhep- actually i don't think it _really has 4 inputs, i think they get the number up to 4in and 10out by including the spdif. the analog i/o is just 2in and 8out. kind of misleading on their part if you ask me.

the m-audio site says '4-in/10-out configuration', but right below that in the actual specs it says:

Features
> 2 x 8 24-bit analog I/O
> 192kHz output (output 1 and 2 only; 96kHz on others); 96kHz input
> digital I/O w/ S/PDIF, AC3 and DTS (coax and optical)

good luck with the drivers, btw- let us know how it shakes out- and hope you weren't expecting a different i/o setup on the 410.

HI there! I was browsing and saw your posts regarding the M-Audio Firewire 410 and you said that there was no driver for OSX Panther? I run a Pro Audio Company in Australia called Green Spider Audio and have just recently sold one of these to a client (recently as in today) and there was a driver for this on the M-Audio page for Panther. Not too sure if you have checked it out or not, but here is the link. panther driver .

I hope this actually works, let me know if it doesn't so I can advise my client, and any future ones.

Or are you saying that you downloaded that and it still didn't work? Sorry if I misunderstood.
