ok, so I'm considering returning my 1.8 ghz G5 and getting a 17 inch powerbook G4 with some upgrades. is this a dumb move? what do people think? is the versatility of the powerbook worth the lack of power compared to a 1.8 G5?

It depends on what you want to do.

Perform live
Have a portable studio
work while you travel etc.

vs

ability to run more plug-ins and samples
SPEED !

personally I love my Dual 2 Ghz G5.
I haven't seen test results of 17" powerbook vs G5 dual 2 GHz
I would think you would be able to run atleast 3-4 times as many plug-ins.

Also you can have 8 Gbyte of RAM in the G5 so if you like using lots of samples (e.g. VSL) you will benefit from the G5.

If it was me I would return the 1.8 GHz and get a dual 2GHz G5.

What sort of things do you want to do with your mac?
Are you totally software based for sounds and effects?
