Greetings!

This is my first posting here at MacMusic.org, and I'm not sure if I'm in the right forum for this question.

I have a Mac 9600 upgraded to a G4/800mhz/592mb ram. Does anyone have a clue as to why this computer will not read audio cds? I would like to be able to rip songs from cds, burn cds in Toast 5.2 Lite, and be able to use them on this computer. I can't use Toast to burn cds, because the computer says all the audio cds are not "initialized". Please help.

I have burned data cds in Toast, and the computer will read them, but not audio.

Anyone able to help?

Thank you very much,

R. Williams

what CD-ROM are you using to try to read the audio CD's? Is it the original CD-Rom furnished by Apple or is it another add on CD-Rom or burner you are trying to use to read audio CD's. Reason I ask is because some third party drives have a hard time reading certain discs.

I would check your extensions and make sure that you have "apple audio extension" and that you have "apple cd/dvd" driver. If you don't have those installed... that could be the problem. Also try using the drive that came with your mac if possible. cool.gif

It won't work if it's Smaple Cds for example as the ISO format is a bit modified so you have to trick toast in order to make a spare of your own CDs.

Make a search it has been already explained here, but maybe in the french forums… If so, just ask, I'll make the effort to translate. cool.gif

Thank you Synthetic and lepetitmartien for your responses,
First, Synthetic, I checked to be postive about the extensions as you suggested, and everything is correct. The CD-ROM is an Apple drive inside the updated computer. It's not the original, because the original I think was too slow for the update, so I switched it for a newer, but still not the latest and greatest, one.
Lepetitmartien, what do you mean when you say "trick" toast? This sounds like something I would like to try.
I'm really frustrated, because I updated this computer as much as I can afford, to be a strictly audio computer. Alas, the CD drive will not read audio CDs. I'm bummed.

I don't know what to do.

If you can give advice. Thank you in advance.

The trick is for CD format not known to the mac (like Akai). And it's aim to copy not to play.

But in your case it is a known format.

Are your CD copy protected?

It could be a GOOD reason. sad.gif

Also, have you toast along iTunes (if you are in 9.1 or 9.2 I don't remember which is the first with the apple software to burn cds), if you don't have the latest versions you'll have troubles… if the Driver is writer also there can be a conflict between toast and the Apple extensions to burn cds.

Either upgrade all or take away the apple extension controling the burning then

Get rid of CD Burner (disable Extension CD Burner in the extensions panel). That should do the trick.
