I 'm running ProTools LE with an MBox on a 466 G4. Sometimes when I'm mixing a session or worse, when in the middle of recording, I get this horrible crackling noise, the song freezes, and I get an error message stating I need to increase my USB Buffer size. I DID THIS, BUT IT DIDN'T HELP! AAAAHHH! It also says for me to delete tracks and/or turn off some effects, but that's absurd! Those actions would be contradictory to the purpose of recording itself, WHat the HELL?!?! It will even do this after I only had TWO tracks running and NO effects at all! I don't get it, and I'm about to throw my MBox through my new 17 inch monitor. UGH!

DON'T THROW IT THROUGH MONITOR!!!!!

just throw it to me... I will take good care of it for you biggrin.gif

try changing the buffer in the DAE app that runs in the background with PT LE... change it to something like 2 I think. Also... give the DAE app more memory to work with by using get info>memory. You might even try giving PT a little more memory too.

Go back and follow scrupulously, the instuctions "Getting Started"

I have a feeling somebody here explained why you shouldn't increase the buffer from the recommended size. Do a search and hope the answer isn't in the French side of MAcMusic.

I have an Mbox and encountered the crackling before anything played. I can't remember why, but ever since I decided only to plug the mbox in AFTER my ibook had finished booting, I've haven't seen the problem again.

If that doesn't work, try starting with the demo song they provide, then check the settings. These should work on your own songs.

Let me know if this helps. If not I'll ask the Frenchies what could be wrong.

I followed your advice on waiting to plug my MBox in AFTER it booted. Twice. Both times my Mac crashed. Yuck.
Thanks for the caring though. I'll continue trying different things.

From the extreme end of the spectrum, maybe related, maybe not: I know of a situation that developed with a MOTU 2408 where it randomly and spontaneously started exhibiting a crackling storm, dancing meters and all. All the software fixes were tried repeatedly. After the obligatory period of condescension from MOTU techies, after the obligatory "check all connections" and "is the unit turned on" and "is there a solar flare" and flaming hoops, they finally said, "Hmmm. Well it's very unlikely but it *could* be the hardware."

The short story is that they actually replaced it, and there were no further problems. Just don't entirely forget that it ain't *alway* user error.

If you still have to throw something, target a plate glass window instead of your monitor: it's much more satisfying, and costs less to replace. biggrin.gif

You must be fuming. I tend to agree with Levon.

Still, I wonder if somethings amiss with the usb connection. Have you tried another usb cable? Usb extension conflict? Just a hunch as I have already heard that crackle (I've been trying to get it again with my Mbox but to no avail yet).

I like Synthetics suggestion ("Digi001 and Quicksilver..." forum):
Make a "Music Set" in your extension manager with OS9 basic + PT stuff only. If it works then add any other music stuff you want. I know music apps don't like competition.

Not related to your problem - but remember you don't need the DigiStudio stuff

I've just posted a translation of your problem on the French side, so if you can hold back for a few days from booking into the mental asylum, or throwing the Mbox at the salesman, we might get a solution.

Summary of reply from clouvel on the French side:

- get the latest update of the usb driver (and PT update while you're at it)

http://www.digidesign.com/download/mbox.html

- I had this type of prob with my Mbox (bad sound, clicks...) - my adsl modem on a hub was the cause. As soon as the modem was unplugged, everything worked fine

Presto now: Digi equipment doesn't like usb hubs. Do you use one?
