i have a dual 2.0 G5 with 1.5G ram running logic 7.0 on osx10.3.9- ...

i've recently got synthogy ivory and kontakt2 which means i've finally got some instruments that actually push the cpu a little so this is the first time the distributed processing in logic has been an issue for me... i know i've read somewhere in these forums about a technique to make logic use both processors but i can't remember where (or what the technique was).

I don't think its my hard drive since although i'm still just using the standard 160G and its getting pretty full there are only a few audio tracks and the HD meter is hardly reaching 10%.. i am using dfd on ivory and kontakt a bit but unless the logic performance meter ignores the DFD activity it can't be that.

So.. can anyone tell me a reliable way to make logic use both processors equally as i can get it to work properly occasionally but most of the time the left cpu is full and the right cpu is left twiddling its thumbs, so i have to freeze a load of tracks to get any work done. I'd like to use both the processors i bought...

thanks in advance

wehey, found it - i knew i'd read about this somewhere

its in sound on sound - incase anyone has the same problem here's what it says:

"If you have a dual-processor Mac and open the CPU monitor, you'll often find that Logic seems only to be using the first processor when playing back a song with many plug-ins. This will often cause the program to throw up a Core Audio error message. If you open the OS X CPU-monitor program (/Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor), you'll see that the operating system itself is actually balancing out processor usage evenly — even though Logic thinks it isn't! You can solve this problem by starting playback, stopping and starting again. You'll see that both CPUs are reported as being used equally in Logic now. You can also force Logic to load the second CPU with a processor intensive plug-in by selecting the track it's on when playing back the song."

cheers

Distributed processing refers not to the processors in a dual processor G5, but to connecting multiple G5's via ethernet or FireWire. You can then specify which tracks in Logic are assigned to which G5.

you're talking about multiple g5s as nodes for logic - but this was about logic not registering correctly the cpu usage between the dual cpu and therefore cutting out the audio when only using about half the cpu capability
