After upgrading from Panther to Tiger, my US-122 stopped functioning. The USB light does not go on, and my computer does not find the US-122. I called up Tascam support; after being on hold for about an hour, they had me delete all US122 files, restart my computer, and re-install the 323 software. No luck. Tascam support told me that the problem must be with my computer running under Tiger, since (a) They have had no problems running under Tiger, and (b) the unit was working on my son's iBook running under Panther.
To verify that the problem was my computer, I upgraded my son's iBook to Tiger. However, once I installed Tiger on my son's laptop, the unit stopped functioning, and now the USB light does not go on when attached to my son's machine. So just to triple check, I installed the 323 software on my daughter's iBook, which is still running Panther. The USB light went on immediately!
Tascam support insists that there are no problems running under Tiger, yet I have reproduced the problem on two computers. All suggestions are welcome, but yes, I've tried switching cables, USB ports, etc, etc. If it matters, my computer is a four year old G4 (Silver CD Doors) running 10.4.1 and my son's laptop is a 4 year old G3 iBook Dual USB running vanilla 10.4.
Am I the only person experiencing this problem? I'm hoping to keep this unit, since it has been performing fine for a year and a half. But if it doesn't run under Tiger, then I shall have to replace it (and it won't be a Tascam product). Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
If it has not been done already repair permissions using Apple drive utility, then make an optimize prebinding using OnyX (to stay simple).
What are the other peripherals on USB plugged in?
I won't be around to follow this, but that's the things I think of… Note the US-122 seems to be temperamental, have a look http://www.macmusic.org/agora/forums/index.php?lang=EN&act=Search&CODE=show&searchid=701fd4fc55c7be77d8f66c18749999b7&search_in=posts&result_type=topics&highlite=us122, maybe there's something for you.
Just thought that I would throw in my 2 cents on this subject because it seems to be popping up alot on the forums now. If your current setup worked with Panther, it probably would have been best to stick with it. It really takes a while for the hardware manufacturers to catch up with the lastest OS revision & make new drivers to address the bugs. Why fix something that really isn't broke? Never mind Mac's sales pitch for their newest offering. I have heard from people with much more knowledge than me on the subject that Panther was about the most stable OS out there & later revisions were "dogs with fleas"- this is probably an exaggeration but, again it takes hardware manufacturers 3 to 6 months to revise their hardware accordingly.
Just to keep anyone who is following this up to date:
1) I tried repairing permissions, it didn't make a difference.
2) The US-122 is the only peripheral plugged in (apart from keyboard & mouse)
3) Doing an optimize prebind seems a little risky to me. The OnyX software was in beta for 10.4, and I'm leary of tinkering with OS internals. But I'm going to do some more research on this.
In answer to MortalEngines, with 20/20 hindsight it was a mistake to upgrade; however in the past I've run into trouble for not updating soon enough and I ended up with orphan data which I could not upgrade at all. perhaps I'm over-reacting to that incident.
That said, if Tascam had clearly posted on their site that their driver didn't work with Tiger, then it would be my fault and I could accept that. However, Tascam has stated on their web site and to me personally that the driver works fine. So one of two things is happening. either (a) Tascam is lying or mistaken OR (b) I'm doing something wrong. I'm hoping for the later. So if anyone out there has gotten a US-122 running under Tiger, would you let us know? Thanks!
For what it's worth, I installed the latest US-122 drivers on my 15" PB last night, running OS 10.4.1, and the U2-122 unit lit up and seemed to work fine.
I hear you & sympathize & when Mac just put Tiger out they did imply that their latest revision was going to work with TONS of different hardware & they do a great job of trying to push it off as essential. Between them and Tascam I am sure that you are dealing with corporate Jerks & the bozos in tech support/development tend to be unhelpful, if a bit arrogant to boot.
Good Luck!
I don't have the Tascam unit but I looked at Tascam's site for a little to see if there were any leads. I know this sounds stupid but did you try a different USB cable? Also I don't know what kind of computer you have but in the manual there is talk of firmware updates you may need depending on your computer.
Hey there eheilner, I have the Tascam US-122 and Tiger and had the same problem you are describing. However after a reinstall of the plug-in from Tascam it all started working again. I would recommend prebinding your system as well and if Onyx in still in beta you can try Cocktail an application that I use and have tested on tiger.
http://nav.440network.com/out.php?mmsc=forums&url=http://www.macosxcocktail.com/
The last resort is a re-install, but fingers crossed right!
I would just like to say that i haver had the same problem of losing my us-122 activity when upgrading to tiger. I tried updating prebindings and re-installing the software but no good. tascam have not replied to my e-mails. The phantom power switch does light up when it's flicked across bu the usb light is out. i don't know what to do now.
Cocktail didn't work for me either.

This is good & bad news. Bad in that our units aren't working, but good in the sense that we're not alone, so we know it's not our fault. It would be a big help if you tell us the year & model of your machine. Since it works for some people but not others, and since my machines are about four years old, my working hypothesis is that there is an incompatability in the driver software for older machines.
eheilner
it is a 700mhz G4 Emac and the us-122 worked fine with panther before. The PC is ex-display model and came out before there was a standard DVD drive i.e. it only has a CD drive. This doesn't mean the machine came out before DVD drives ever did but only before Apple decided to put them in Emacs. It is a first-wave emac basically, not as old as your mac but may well be suffering from old drivers.
interesting eh?

My US-122 works with Tiger. Did you disconnect all USB and FW cables before upgrading? If not, this can cause problems with drivers.
Yes, I disconnected all cables before upgrading to Tiger, and all cables were disconnected while upgrading the US-122 software.

This is not quite the same issue. But I am using a G4 1.67 powerbook. Worked fine under Panther. Upgraded to Tiger. No go. RE-Installed the drivers. USB lit up, but no sound got to the 'puter. After messing around for a bit. This seemingly did the trick...
Make sure that the phantom is switched off when you plug the US-122 into the 'puter. Then I switched it on, only after verifying that the unit was sending sound.
May not be of much help. But it worked for me.
I've been dealing with this bullshit for months tascam's upgraded driver that claims to work with 10.2.6 and up didnt do shit im starting to get so pissed that i paid 200 dollars for this and there's nothing i can do with it. i've tried making the us-122 both output and input, nothing i've fucked around with usb cables and phantom switche's,nothing. my powerbook came with tiger so its not like i can go back to panther or anything, wish i had an answer.....
Dear Socatevoli,
I think I speak for the bulk of the users on this site when I respectfully ask you to refrain from profanity when posting to this forum. This is not a Jr. High study hall, and I think you would be hard-pressed to find many people on this site who would not be just as willing to help you out without having to wade through your four-letter words. I'm sure there are impressionable, talented kids who are using this site, and it is extremely irresponsible for you to rant in this fashion. Rant away, my friend, but do it with a vocabulary that reveals your intelligence. You'll go a lot farther and get much closer to resolving your issues.
By the way, I had the same problem with the Tascam unit, and it now sits in my closet collecting dust. It became a good tax write-off, but that's about it. Now it's just an expensive piece of plastic in my closet.
Sorry about the sermon, but I have a 9-year-old nephew and a 3-year-old niece. I'm kinda sensitive to the language thing.
dont let them read it and it wont hurt them there only words ....anyway......after pissing around with it for a few hours last night it kinda dawned on me that i was using a multiport usb station....so....i just plugged the tascam right into my powerbook and woollaa....stupid easy solutions always work somehow
Just to wrap up my tale of woe here. First, thanks to everyone who responded with suggestions, unfortunately nothing has worked for me. I have un-installed and re-installed the driver software so many times now that I could do it in my sleep. I called Tascam support 3 times with no luck. Finally, in despiration I sent this e-mail to both Tascam Customer Support and Tascam Public Relations:
Good for you, eheliner!
I had the same problem you did, so bravo for writing that letter to Tascam. Maybe someone will perk up over there and fix that glorified piece of plastic they're selling.
hahaworld
I have a tascam US-224 and am having the same problems. The unit worked fine in Panther; then I upgraded to Tiger. Tried reinstalling the Tascam 3.2.3 sit software about 5 times. No success. I will try calling Tascam on Monday but last time I called they were reluctant to help in the help department, oh yeah and they all have lunch 12 until 1. The power light works but no USB connection. Yes, I tried everything.
I don't have time to read everything (I know, it's BAAAAAD
But: OnyX is no more in beta for Tiger
The GPO stand alone Kontakt player won't work correctly with my US-122. That's the only problem i've run into so far. Remember to repair disk permissions in Apple's disk utility. Apps>utilities.
I know this hasn't been discussed for a while & maybe some of you have sorted it out? but I need your help. I am having a nightmare trying to install my Tascam US122 onto my iMac G5 running tiger Os X 10.4.
I have installed the files from the included std installation disk but it doesn't respond when the system restarts. I made sure not to have the usb connected when installing & have tried uninstalling etc but still nothing.
Now - I am a new mac user so feel free to point out ay stupid mistakes I may be making?
Just can't get it to communicate with my imac
Help????
In the French forum, someone else is trying the same interface with a brand new ibook/tiger, and to no avail.
Is your driver the 3.2.3? it's the mandatory one for 10.4.x. Also, are you in 10.4.0, 10.4.1 or 10.4.2?
I think I am 10.4.0 (like I said I am still new to it) on my paperwork it just says 10.4.
Sorry still learning...
any help would be much appreciated
thanks
i have just found out that i have 10.4.2
I have installed the 3.2.3 driver from the tascam site & the imac does recognise it as a piece of hardware but the usb still doesn't light up & still no sound!
any ideas?
Before trying updates…
One user in the French forum says it works perfectly in Tiger BUT with the supposed Panther only driver…
with a mic plugged in and my headphone plugged in the 122 does playback the mic. Still no communication with the mac tho- no usb lighting up
Maybe you have a bad USB cable. If the light isn't on that means it's not getting power. Check your connections and them try a different USB cable.
Maybe a complete ports reset would help, someone remember how to do so on powerbooks (I never remember sorry… I'm not a laptop user… maybe it's http://nav.440network.com/out.php?mmsc=forums&url=http://urth.acsu.buffalo.edu/~pld/Labstuff/powermgr.html
Meanwhile, zap the PRAM (you'll loose a few stupid thing), for the procedure search "PRAM" in the forum, it's there in zillions copies.
I was told once by an Apple tech that zapping the pram in OSX doesn't do much like it did in OS9 but it can't hurt.
i have tried various different usb cables - still nothing.
what other audio interface would you recommend for the imac os x10.4.2 running logic pro 7?
Check out the Edirol UA25. It seems to have the same features as the US-122
http://nav.440network.com/out.php?mmsc=forums&url=http://www.edirol.com/
My personal experiences with edirol stuff on both mac and PCs has been more on the frustrating side (glitches in audio whatever you do about 2 years ago on USB interfaces), I hope it gets better…
For the PRAM, there's less parameters stored there when you use OS X given the un*x ascendency. When nothing obvious works, then go for the less obvious even if it's weird.
Hi,
I'm in the same situation. I run a production lab in the AV Center of our school.
I just upgraded two one year old G5 PowerMacs to Tiger and our US-122's have stopped functioning. I now have students who are no longer able to use these two DAW's.
I just happen to be in the process of setting up two new workstations for our students. I was going to purchase two additional US-122's but the serious lack of support from Tascam on this issue has changed that. I will not be purchasing any Tascam products for those workstations (or for any other applications in our AV Center).
A company that doesn't support its customers will soon find that its customers don't support it!
To Mr. K,
Wonderfully said, have you sent this to tascam's 122 or 224 Forum? Please do. I sent an email to tech about a week ago; I am still awaiting a response, an apology, anything...
To 2l82run, has tascam actually said anything, to anyone?
I just tried the Tascam US-122 on my old iBook G3 600 running OS 10.4.2 and it seems to work fine. Everything lights up and I recorded a vocal track in Garageband.
Hello.
You can add me to the list of Tascam hater's!!! Although I do not own the US-122 i own the US-224. I am having the exact same problem. I'm running a powerbook G4 and recently installed tiger. Everything worked fine with Panther but now I have the problem described earlier in this forum. Power light turns on but no USB light. Checked the uS-224 manager and it doesn't recognize the US-224. Uninstalled and Reinstalled about 5 times to no avail. I've also run disk reppair.....no luck. I've also emailed Tascam customer service, it's been about 2 weeks now and no response. I might try to take this hunk of plastic back and purchase something else but I don't know if it's too late or not....
Any new Idea's????
Oh i've also tried 3 different USB cables.
Tascam ..........BOOOOOOOOOOOOO
