440 Forums _ MOTU _ Motu 828 Mk2 & High-pitched Noise

Posted by: bubba Wed 22 Mar 2006, 18:56

I have a motu 828 mk2 and have had major problems with it.

I get this high-pitched noise every so often, and when the sound comes back in it's all grainy and distorted.

I have tried it on a powerbook g4, windows xp PC, Dell laptop...with pretty much the same results on all of them.

Motu gave me another unit, as they found a different problem with it...but, I STILL have the same problem.

Anyone any Ideas I've had this problem for over 2 years now, and I'm ready to chuck it in the garbage.

MOTU technical support have been absolutly useless....

Some 828 have problems but usually MOTU fix things.

Else… does the noise occurs only at home? Have you tried elsewhere?
Have you tried the CHUD tools trick http://www.macmusic.org/agora/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=5&t=26659&hl=chud&s=&lang=EN unsure.gif

It doesn't seem to matter where it's hooked up- I've tried it at home and elsewhere..- I've tried 2 differwnt pc's..my friends laptop, desktop both XP)& powerbook g4 OS9..same, or similar problem.. theres not much point in me trying the CHUD thing as I mainly use PC & OS9

Only latest suspect is Quicktime 7.04 as some users reported the same problem occurring after the install, but it may not be relevant here…

There's no neon lights near? (going into really eyrie stuff…)

Thanks for the replies, I'll check out the quicktime thing, but I think it's unlikely as it happens on both Mac & PC formats.

No neon lights here either!

Try to reset it:

- Unplug the firewire
- press the button "setup", turn full right until "factory default"
- push select
- confirm with "value"
- plug back firewire

Someone has the problem right now too in the French forum, it helps wink.gif

To sum up, suspects are:

- something wrong in the hardware (and MOTU can take months to solve this…)
- you need a reset
- maybe Quicktime…

Thanks for the reply, I've tried the reset thing on both 828mk2's I had- but with no luck...I'll try uninstalling quicktime, but I don't think it was installed on my new harddrive installation. As for it being a broken unit- if it is, this will be the second 828mk2 they've given me that doesn't work.

MOTU aren't interested in helping me out much here until I've reinstalled everything again, but this time not using ACPI so I can avoid IRQ sharing..even though I disabled whatever it was that was sharing with my firewire interface..oh- and I also have the problem on my Powerbook with nothing else connected to it!!

I wish they had just fixed my original 828 instead of charging me an extra £150 for this turkey...

for the ACPI/IRQ stuff I think it's PC stuff… I can't help you there… Some PCs don't like MOTU at all, that's all I know.

About the powerbook, try the CHUD trick! it helps. (it may not solve everything, but it helps most of the time)

Have you access to a firewire PCI card you can borrow? so you can try the 828 on it…
